TL;DR - Quick Summary
- Who it is for: Australian individuals, sole traders, and businesses converting statements from CommBank, Westpac, NAB, ANZ, and other Australian banks.
- Date format: Keep dates as DD/MM/YYYY for MYOB, Xero AU, and Reckon, since 01/31/2025 is the US format and wrong here.
- Financial year: Statement cycles often straddle 30 June, so split that statement at 30 June to match the 1 July to 30 June year.
- Watch out for: GST credits, because a bank statement is not a tax invoice and the ATO expects one for purchases over $82.50 including GST.
- Start: Convert with the PDF to CSV converter.

Australian Date & Currency Format
Why Australian Format Matters
Date Format: DD/MM/YYYY
Australia uses day-first format (31/12/2024), same as UK. Critical for MYOB, Xero AU, and Reckon compatibility.
β Correct: 31/01/2025
β Wrong: 01/31/2025 (US format)
Currency: AUD ($)
Australian dollar with decimal formatting (.00). Dollar sign ($) used, but context makes it AUD not USD.
β Format: $1,234.56
ISO code: AUD
β Automatic Aussie Formatting
Our converter detects Australian bank statements and automatically applies DD/MM/YYYY dates and AUD formatting for perfect MYOB and Xero AU compatibility.

ATO Tax Compliance
Australian Taxation Office (ATO) Requirements
ATO requires Australian taxpayers to keep records for 5 years. Bank statements in CSV/Excel format are acceptable records for tax audits, BAS, and annual returns.
Individual Tax Returns
CSV statements document income, deductions, work-related expenses for myTax lodgment.
Business Activity Statements (BAS)
Import to MYOB or Xero AU for GST calculation and quarterly BAS lodgment.
Record Retention
Keep CSV files for 5 years from lodgment. ATO accepts electronic records.
Superannuation
Track super contributions and employer payments for compliance and retirement planning.
Can I claim GST credits straight from my bank statement?
The statement shows what you paid, but it is not a tax invoice. For purchases over $82.50 including GST, the ATO expects you to hold a tax invoice before claiming the GST credit on your BAS. Use the converted statement to find every purchase that needs one, then chase the missing invoices. Most bank fees and interest are input-taxed financial supplies, so they carry no GST credit at all.
How do I line up monthly statements with the 1 July to 30 June financial year?
Australian statement cycles often end mid-month, so one statement usually straddles 30 June. Download the statements that cover the whole year from your internet banking, convert them, and split the straddling statement at 30 June so the July lines go into the next year's file. Check that the balance on 30 June in your spreadsheet matches the end-of-year figure your bank or accounting software shows.
I already have a bank feed in Xero or MYOB. Do I still need to convert PDFs?
Usually only for the period before the feed started. A new feed brings in transactions from around the connection date and may not reach back to the start of the financial year. Convert the statements for the gap, import them as a statement file, and stop the import at the day before the first feed transaction so nothing is entered twice.
What should a sole trader pull from statements for a myTax or agent-lodged return?
Filter the converted file for business income deposits, then for deductible expenses such as tools, phone and internet, vehicle running costs, and subscriptions. Mark which expenses are partly private so the business-use percentage can be applied. The totals give your tax agent a starting point, and the receipts you keep back up each figure.
